One Step at a Time

I’ve spent some time going back and reading some of my posts. Most are very passionate and some a little humorous. But I realize this morning what’s missing. The obvious, the simple.

Nobody said life would be easy. That’s an understatement. I guess there are times like now, that you have to strip yourself bare and start over. In doing this you, I suppose, have no choice but to begin with the most elementary of all concepts.. Put one foot in front of the other.

My legs are wobbly, my footing precarious to say the least but here goes.. One step at a time.

A note to those who care about me, I’m counting on your help should I stumble and fall.

The ones who have been there and extended a hand to help me up in the past know who they are. The ones who helped knock me down a time or two, well you also know who you are. And so do I…

A Different Perspective

Problems of Priveledge: the truck breaks down, you get called into work, the clothes dryer breaks…what if these inconveniences were not so?

You have no vehicle, you have no job and you sure as hell don’t have a clothes dryer.

When something goes wrong tweak your perspective just a little and see what happens..

It really is that simple IF you keep practicing how you not only look at things but how you really SEE them.

Selling Out

So let me get this straight.. You work for a multimillion dollar healthcare organization. Every fucking staff meeting in the last 15 or so years is focused on “customer service “?!
Then you throw your loyal employees under the bus and sell out?!
What about my employee satisfaction and retainment?
Wake the fuck up! Customer satisfaction is a schmooze term for “show me the money”!!
If you want me to “script” my entrance into a patient’s room then you had better damn well support my efforts.
I want to care for Human beings when they need help ..all you want is the almighty dollar and all you care about is the next fiscal year!
Tell me this.. If your were in a crisis who do want taking care of you or your loved one ? An experienced, certified RN or some poor soul off the unemployment line making $10/hr? Stop and think …
Thanks again to our country’s leadership.. Thank you for FUCKING up the lives and careers of your citizens!! Remember them? The ones you are supposed to represent???!!

The End of Florence Nightingale

I spent all night lying on a torn vinyl covered cot staring at the ceiling in my sister’s hospital room. I managed to fall asleep for about an hour. As I went to get up I almost busted my ass when one of the wheels on the damn thing fell off!
I then came to the realization that It was Wednesday. I had to take a 1.5 hr. computer module certification on a new IV pump system just to get me in the door of the 2 hour class for tomorrow.

OK, so let me get this right…I am responsible for taking care of the patient as a nurse, having intimate knowledge of various computer programs (Spacelabs, Sunrise, Allscripts, Omnicell, Pixus, AS400, Staffing Angel, and others), I am a social worker, a babysitter, a mechanic, biomed tech, waitress, housekeeper and transporter. I hold numerous certifications including BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and ENPC.

I know how to operate a ventilator, rapid infuser, ICP monitor, maintain an ART line. I can drill a hole in your bone using an IO if I can’t get venous access, I can insert just about any kind of tube in every orifice you could think of. I know how to read a 12 lead EKG to rapidly determine if you are having a heart attack. I can read an x-ray fairly well and I can spot even the tiniest of discrepancies on most any CT scan.

You wonder why you don’t get your cup of water within 5 minutes? You bitch and moan when we don’t know all the TV channels and you complain when we won’t let you eat because of pending exams.

Know this..many nurses are pushed to the breaking point. When asked why not change careers we say because I am a “nurse”. It is a not just a career, it becomes who you are.

Think about that next time you are in the ED or an inpatient.

If you become disillusioned about your care call the “Big Dawgs” in administration. Our hands are tied. Thank you President Obama!

Regardless..I am a NURSE and damn proud of it!!

A woman

So this morning I have an ample amount of time. What do I usually do? I blog.
I have been thinking.. “what is a woman?”
She is so much more than you think!
She has the ability to carry a human life inside her.
She has the ability to take care of others.. At home and work.
She has the ability to appear strong when it’s all falling apart.
She has the ability to hold back the tears when it seems as though its almost impossible.
She has the ability to Love when it is not in kind.
She has the ability to dream yet know those dreams are beyond the rainbow.
She has the ability to say I’m sorry and mean it.

She needs to be wanted. Regardless of what she says .
She needs to be held, no matter what the circumstance.
She needs to be made love to as if she is the only ONE.
She is.. A woman.

Thrifty is not a bad word!

So let me explain something about “popping tags”. Yesterday I dropped $300 on a pair of jeans and a bottle of Chanel perfume.  How could I do this? Because the rest of the time I am a thrifty spender. Do I shop at Goodwill?  Yep. Am I a bargain hunter? Yep.
It’s all a state of mind..look at it as getting the most out of your hard-earned money with recycling as an added benefit. It’s almost a must in this day and time. I drive a nice Expedition but the cost of gas will just about knock you to your knees. I have a descent three bedroom, two bath home in a nice,  safe neighborhood. I buy my son the best..Nike, Under Armour,  and the like. He goes to a private school. But..he knows the value of a dollar. He has over $100 dollars in his wallet as pure spending money. He plans on buying an Ipod Touch or an IPad.

So, am I ashamed to say that I “pop some tags”..hell no.
